Transforming In-Home Care
Upperstate identified a significant gap in communication between caregivers and care recipients, particularly those with visual impairments or speech limitations. Existing systems lacked nuance and clarity, often relying on traditional panic buttons that didn’t provide specific information about the recipient's needs. Caregivers needed a more intuitive, accessible way to understand and respond to requests, while recipients needed a clearer, more reliable method to express their needs.
A Human-Centred Approach
Guided by our Human-Centred Design (HCD) approach, we developed a solution that simplifies communication through a shared, easily accessible system. Upperstate introduced a streamlined remote with four core communication options: Pain, Comfort, Water, and Bathroom. The device sends instant notifications to the caregiver's app, smartphone, or wearable, ensuring fast, accurate responses. The interface was specifically designed to be intuitive, accessible, and usable by those with low dexterity.
Startup Growth
Our collaboration with Upperstate resulted in a product that meets both functional and emotional needs, bridging communication gaps in in-home care. The solution empowers care recipients with a more effective way to communicate while providing caregivers with the clarity they need to offer timely and appropriate care. Additionally, our support for Upperstate extended to shaping their crowdfunding strategy, creating a solid foundation for their Kickstarter campaign. This partnership not only ensured the product’s success in addressing user needs but also provided the visibility and support necessary for Upperstate's startup growth and market entry.
